About us

About us

Dame Catherine Harpur’s School in Ticknall is a flourishing and friendly rural school, catering for children from age 3 right up to age 11.

To ensure our children get the attention they deserve we have a maximum of 30 in school, divided into two classes. Plus a maximum of 8 children in the nursery class in any session.

Dame Catherine’s has an incredibly happy environment, small enough for children to receive individual encouragement and support, yet large enough to provide them with social and intellectual stimulation and a rich variety of experiences.

Our Nursery now offers full day care, with Government Funded Vouchers for 5 sessions per week, plus supervised lunch sessions, and the option of wrap-around care 8.15am – 6pm. Please contact us to discuss available sessions as we limit our numbers to eight children per session, which benefits the children hugely.

Inside, there are three teaching rooms, incorporating our library and resource area,  cloakrooms, an office and kitchen as well as the nursery room. In addition, we have a dedicated music room which has enabled the school to offer extra curricular activities, and individual music lessons, and we make full use of the adjacent village hall for PE and after school clubs such as multi-sports and dance.

As well as a spacious playground, there is also a large garden, incorporating wildlife areas, gardening plots as well as play equipment. The garden and wider surroundings are used in all kinds of educational projects, from history to handicrafts, which is not only great fun for the children, but also helps to promote their awareness of the environment. We also have close links with the neighbouring Calke Estate (National Trust) and are regular visitors to the grounds and facilities they have to offer.
